Plan a responsible visit

Visiting Peaky Blinders filming locations

Peaky Blinders locations fall into four clusters, and it helps to plan by cluster rather than by series. Dudley's Black Country Living Museum is a stand-alone day out with the one official filming tour. Liverpool has the most locations within reach of each other and of good public transport, with Formby and Port Sunlight a short Merseyrail ride away. Cheshire's two Arrow House estates are best by car. Bradford, Leeds, Saltaire and the Worth Valley line can be strung together by train.

Most of the free-to-see places are public exteriors: St George's Hall, Liverpool Cathedral, Bradford City Hall, Leeds Town Hall and the streets of Little Germany. The places that charge are heritage attractions with their own calendars, especially Black Country Living Museum, Arley Hall, Tatton Park and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Check opening days and current prices on each official site before you book travel, as several open seasonally or on selected dates.

None of the period dressing survives. Watery Lane has been refurbished and lived in for years, Arrow House's rooms are back to their normal state, and the Garrison was a set. What you will recognise is the shape of the places: the canal and forge at the museum, the colonnade of St George's Hall, the long terraces of Powis Street and the facade of Arley Hall.

By rail

Liverpool Lime Street is directly opposite St George's Hall and a walk from the cathedral; Merseyrail runs from the city centre to Freshfield for Formby Beach and to Port Sunlight on the Wirral line. For Black Country Living Museum, Tipton and Dudley Port are the nearest stations, with buses towards the museum. In Yorkshire, Bradford Interchange and Forster Square serve Little Germany and City Hall, Saltaire station is beside Salts Mill, and Keighley station connects mainline trains with the Worth Valley heritage line. Knutsford station is the closest for Tatton Park, though the mansion is a long walk across the park.

Buses

Buses fill the gaps in Liverpool, especially for Powis Street in Toxteth, Stanley Dock on the dock road and Croxteth Country Park in West Derby. Undercliffe Cemetery is a short bus ride from Bradford city centre. Rural Cheshire is poorly served by buses, so Arley Hall is realistically a car or taxi trip. Check local operators' timetables before relying on a connection.

Parking and driving

Black Country Living Museum, Arley Hall, Tatton Park, Croxteth Country Park and National Trust Formby all have car parks, with charges at several of them. Formby's car park fills early on sunny weekends. In Liverpool, Bradford and Leeds, use city-centre car parks and walk. Do not park in the residential streets around Powis Street or Port Sunlight to sightsee.

Seasons and opening

Arley Hall's gardens open seasonally, roughly spring to autumn, and its Hall opens on selected days only. The museum's filming tour runs on selected dates through the year. The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway runs mainly at weekends and in school holidays, with more trains in summer. Formby is at its best on a clear day at low tide, and winter light suits the bleak mood of the series four beach scene. Most indoor venues keep shorter hours in winter, so check before travelling.

Accessibility.

The museum has cobbles, slopes and some areas on the filming tour that are unsuitable for wheelchairs; ask when booking. City sites such as St George's Hall's plateau, Bradford City Hall and Leeds Town Hall's square are level. Liverpool Cathedral's main floor is step-free. Formby's dune paths are sandy and uneven. Arley's garden paths include gravel and grass. The heritage railway can carry wheelchair users in suitable carriages with notice. Check each venue's own access guide before you go.

Private means private.

Powis Street and Port Sunlight are lived-in residential streets: look from the pavement, keep noise down and do not photograph residents, front doors or house numbers. Polly's house is a private home and is deliberately not identified. Stanley Dock's warehouses and Cater Street's buildings are private premises. Undercliffe Cemetery and Liverpool Cathedral are places of mourning and worship, so behave accordingly. The studios used for new Peaky Blinders series are working sites with no public access.
