How Liverpool Cathedral appears
Liverpool Cathedral plays a church in Small Heath, used for the series' worship scenes over several series and for a meeting in series six. In the story it is a Catholic church in Birmingham; in reality it is the Anglican cathedral of Liverpool, a twentieth-century Gothic building on a ridge above the city. Its huge sandstone interior and side spaces gave the production room to frame quiet, intimate church scenes without revealing the full scale of the building, which is why many viewers do not recognise it at first.
The real place
What you can visit
The cathedral is a working place of worship that welcomes visitors. Entry to the main building is free, with donations invited, and there are paid extras such as the tower, which has wide views over the city and the Mersey. Services, concerts and events can close parts of the building at short notice, so check the website on the day. The cathedral has a café and shop. Nothing from filming remains, but the nave, the Lady Chapel and the great windows are well worth the visit in their own right.
Visit outside service times, keep voices low and follow any photography rules posted at the door.
Liverpool Film Office: Peaky Blinders locations ↗The cathedral is on St James Mount, about 15 minutes' walk uphill from Lime Street or Central stations, or a short bus ride. There is a car park on site. The main floor is step-free; the tower involves lifts and stairs, so check access details before booking.
