Culloden Battlefield
Essential story and historical context, but not the battlefield filming location. Visit it for the real history and label it accordingly.
Visit the official siteOutlander turns Scotland into several different countries and centuries. Doune Castle supplies Castle Leoch, Midhope Castle is the exterior of Lallybroch, Culross becomes Cranesmuir and Falkland stands in for Inverness. Edinburgh's closes, Glasgow's streets and the estates around the Forth complete a map that works best as several regional journeys, rather than one hurried national circuit.
This guide covers Outlander seasons 1–8, with Blood of My Blood included only where a filming location is supported by the cited sources.
Doune Castle supplies the main exterior and courtyard. Other properties contribute separate gardens, grounds and interiors.
Midhope supplies the exterior. Check the current visitor site for grounds admission and closures; screen interiors were filmed elsewhere.
Walk Edinburgh Old Town, then choose the Forth castles or Fife villages. Glasgow and the Highlands deserve separate travel days.
No. Craigh na Dun is fictional, its stones were props and the filming field is private. Keep historical visits separate.

The central distinction in an Outlander journey is between the story's geography and the production's geography. Scotland supplies castles and Highland landscapes that play themselves in broad terms, but it also becomes Paris, Versailles, Boston, Harvard and North Carolina. A building may have several screen identities, and a fictional house may combine an exterior, an unrelated interior and a studio set. Use the individual location's role rather than assuming that a familiar name identifies the complete screen place. The photographs show the real visitor destination, not a promise that a particular production room remains dressed for filming.
The early Scottish story gives a first visit its clearest structure. Doune is Castle Leoch, Blackness is Fort William and Linlithgow Palace contributes the passages and entrance associated with Wentworth Prison. Midhope is the Lallybroch exterior and Preston Mill supplies a mill connected with that home. These are separate historic places with their own reasons to visit. Their opening calendars and admission arrangements matter more than a route's apparent neatness on a map. Historic Environment Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland manage several important stops, but membership or admission at one property should never be assumed to cover another organisation's site.
Fife offers a different kind of screen recognition. Culross's streets become Cranesmuir, while the palace and garden contribute other interiors and outdoor spaces. Falkland's village streets and fountain play Inverness, and the palace cellar has its own screen identity. Aberdour Castle and Dysart Harbour extend the region's range without turning it into a walkable cluster. Spend time with the villages as lived-in places, looking at their wider streets and historic setting. A quiet public street is not an invitation to enter a house, look through a window or stand in a doorway while matching a scene.
Edinburgh and Glasgow are useful for travellers who prefer public transport. Bakehouse Close and Tweeddale Court make a short Old Town walk; Craigmillar is a separate castle visit. Glasgow's cathedral, civic square, west-end park and country park demonstrate how far a production can travel without leaving one city. The university remains a working institution, so this guide excludes it from visitor pins and prepared routes. Historic architecture in a production does not give fans access to teaching spaces, offices or courtyards that are closed on the day. Choose public destinations first and treat additional views as conditional.
The Highlands and south-west should be planned as journeys in their own right. Glencoe is an extensive landscape associated with the opening titles, not a single camera-position hunt. The Highland Folk Museum interprets real social history as well as its use in the rent-collecting story. Dunure combines a harbour and castle setting, while Dean Castle and Drumlanrig belong to different regional travel decisions. Beyond the main series, the prequel appears here only where a cited source supports a real filming place. This is an independent fan guide, not an official STARZ, Sony Pictures Television, Left Bank Pictures, Tall Ship Productions or Diana Gabaldon publication.
These places add context but are not filming-location claims.

Visit the official siteOften associated with Craigh na Dun by visitors, but the standing-stone scenes were filmed elsewhere using prop stones.
Visit the official siteThe Craigh na Dun hill is on private farmland. Its screen significance does not create public access, so it is not promoted as an atlas stop.
Visit the official siteCheck the official STARZ listing and the UK availability guide before choosing a service. Rights and season availability vary by territory, and the main series and prequel may have different listings. This guide does not promise a complete streaming catalogue or a particular subscription package.
The main novels run from Outlander, published as Cross Stitch in the UK, through Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, An Echo in the Bone, Written in My Own Heart's Blood and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. Use the author's list for reading order and publication information; a novel's setting is not evidence of a television filming location.
Scotland supplies the principal locations covered here, including places dressed as other countries. That does not mean every screen interior or every production journey belongs to a public Scottish attraction. Read each record for its specific role and separate studio work from the place you can visit. Read more
Doune Castle is the central visitor stop for Castle Leoch. Its screen identity does not make other properties' gardens, interiors or landscapes part of Doune. Check the castle's own visitor information for access, and use the linked location page to understand exactly what its credit covers. Read more
Use the current Midhope visitor website to check admission and closures before setting off. Grounds access and screen interiors are different matters. Do not assume that an old estate-pass arrangement, a tour advertisement or an image taken through the gate describes today's visitor offer. Read more
They are valuable historical and literary context for an Outlander journey, but those associations do not establish the battle or standing-stone filming claims. Keep a visit for real history separate from a screen-location itinerary. Neither place receives a filming pin on that basis in this guide. Read more
Yes, by choosing a smaller area. Edinburgh Old Town is the clearest walking start, and Glasgow offers public urban destinations. Rural estates and dispersed villages require more timetable work. Confirm the final connection and return journey before booking accommodation or combining several ticketed sites. Read more
No. A recurring castle or a season-level production credit does not prove an appearance in every episode. The episode list links only where the cited evidence identifies the episode relationship. Unlinked entries still belong to the broadcast order and can be read without implying a new destination. Read more
The map is for public visitor planning. Private fields, homes and working sites do not receive pins, and a broad landscape is not represented as a precise shooting position. Use the text records to understand these boundaries before treating a map marker as permission to enter. Read more
Choose a compact region and let the main visit set the pace. A castle interior, a garden and a village walk each need time beyond driving. The prepared routes are starting points, and you should remove stops when opening dates, public transport or accessibility make the day impractical. Read more
