How Drummond Castle Gardens appears

Drummond Castle Gardens stand in for the gardens of Versailles during season two’s French chapter. Their formal geometry supplies a recognisable royal landscape, separate from the interior and exterior house locations used elsewhere. The ordered garden provides a formal counterpoint to the drama unfolding among the characters during their time in France. The garden role is also separate from Drummond Castle itself: a filming connection with the designed landscape does not establish that the house was used or that visitors can enter it. The experience is strongest when viewed as Scottish landscape design performing a carefully selected French identity.

The real place

What you can visit

The real gardens are near Muthill and Crieff in Perthshire. Formal planting, ordered paths and the relationship with the castle create the structured outlook that makes the screen comparison useful. They are a seasonal garden attraction rather than a general castle-interior visit. The castle is not open for ordinary public visiting, so the building is part of the setting rather than an assumed next stage of the route. Time spent reading the whole garden layout is more rewarding than treating it as a backdrop to one standing position.

Start with an overall view of the pattern, then explore the paths; the change from distant symmetry to close detail explains the location’s screen appeal.

Getting there.

Check the garden’s current seasonal calendar and access guidance before committing to the journey. A map listing for Drummond Castle is not proof of an open house or garden. Enquire about gradients, steps and suitable viewpoints if needed, choosing a route that lets your party enjoy both the overall layout and smaller details. Plan a Perthshire travel day with enough time for the garden, rather than adding it after a full castle-and-distillery programme without checking closing arrangements.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Can I enter Drummond Castle?

The castle itself is closed to general visiting. The public attraction is the seasonal garden. Do not treat a garden ticket or an Outlander filming credit as permission to enter the house or private estate buildings.

Is this the only Versailles location?

No. The series assembled its French world from several Scottish places. Drummond’s supported contribution is the Versailles gardens; Gosford supplies a separate confirmed Versailles filming connection. Combining them on screen does not make them neighbouring places in real Scotland.

Does the season matter for visiting?

Yes. Public garden access is seasonal, and planting, weather and available routes affect the experience. Use the current operator’s calendar before travelling. Check the current calendar and garden notices, and enjoy the landscape as it appears on your date rather than expecting a particular flower display.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Choose Drummond as a Perthshire anchor, with Doune as a possible earlier stop only when the calendars and your pace allow both.
