How Loch Katrine appears

Loch Katrine supplies the lakeside setting for Brianna and Roger in season two. Their story belongs to the Inverness strand of Outlander, but this water lies in the Trossachs near Callander. The filming connection centres on Brenachoile Point and the shore, rather than a building visitors can enter. Look at the relationship between the road, wooded slopes and open water to understand the choice of location. The scenery is more useful to a visit than trying to reproduce a single camera position.

The real place

What you can visit

Trossachs Pier is the practical starting point for exploring this part of the loch. The shoreline can be enjoyed on foot, by cycle or through a boat excursion, with each offering a different sense of the water and surrounding slopes. This is a landscape visit rather than an indoor attraction. A trip to the pier and a longer outing towards Brenachoile Point require different amounts of time, so choose the scale of the day before setting out.

Choose a lochside outing that suits your group, rather than making the day depend on identifying one television angle.

Getting there.

Check the pier's current visitor information and any boat arrangements before travel. Allow for the outward journey along the shore as well as the return, and check the route before committing to a longer walk. Wear suitable footwear and carry weather protection. Ask about the suitability of the chosen path if level access is important.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Is Loch Katrine really near Inverness?

The filming location is in the Trossachs near Callander. The Inverness association belongs to Brianna and Roger’s story, rather than the real geography of the loch.

Which part of the shore is associated with filming?

Brenachoile Point is the named location. Plan a walk or cycle around the available public route; there is no need to leave the path for a matching view.

Do I need a boat to appreciate the location?

No. A shoreline outing and a boat excursion are different ways to enjoy Loch Katrine. Check the distance and conditions of the option you choose.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Combine with the Doune and Deanston area only if the loch remains a substantial part of the day.
