This guide covers the BBC crime drama and aired series 1–10, with later production discussed separately.
Lerwick and locations across Shetland provide the island exteriors, with additional mainland production.

Begin with Commercial Street and the public harbour, using the town as a real working place rather than a sequence of private character addresses. Choose a lane walk according to your group's needs, then continue to Hays Dock for Shetland Museum and Archives. Allow proper exhibition time. Local bus stops at King Harald Street and Commercial Road can help shape the walk without moving a car between viewpoints.
Open the day outChoose St Ninian's beach and Scousburgh Sands as the principal outdoor stops, allowing time for their separate approaches and walks. Do not add private farm entrances to the route. Continue to Sumburgh Head only if daylight and conditions leave enough time for the uphill approach. The cafe's hotel role is distinct from Sumburgh Hotel's care-home setting. Use a second day for a longer lighthouse or wildlife visit, or add Jarlshof for archaeology under its own admission arrangements. Jarlshof is a nearby cultural stop here, not a filming credit. A future Mousa Boat trip needs a separate seasonal sailing plan and return departure; the ordinary ferry service is closed for winter 2026.
Open the day outBreak the northern journey at Lower Voe's public waterside and pier, keeping the Sail Loft's accommodation use private. Continue through the Brae area towards Eshaness for the main cliff walk when conditions suit. Use the lighthouse car park and official route information rather than turning into croft entrances. Leave daylight for the drive back. If staying around Brae or Hillswick, use another day for a longer Northmavine outing. Include Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary only after the team agrees a visit. Otherwise, keep the day to public village and coastal routes. A sanctuary appearance in series four does not turn rescue work into an open animal display.

Lerwick is the most useful place to begin a Shetland location trip. Commercial Street, the harbour and public town spaces give the television investigations a recognisable home base, while the real town supplies shops, transport and an indoor visit at Shetland Museum and Archives. This is a working island community rather than a film set left in place. Walk the public streets, enjoy the waterfront and give residents, deliveries and businesses room. The private lodberry associated with Jimmy Perez is not a visitor attraction and has no pin in this guide. A character's familiar address does not provide permission to approach the real home or look through its windows.
The television landscape extends well beyond town. Eshaness supplies the exposed North Mainland coast associated with the fictional Pit of Biddista, while the South Mainland offers St Ninian's Isle and Scousburgh Sands. Burra adds Meal and Minn, two separate beaches with their own paths and parking. These locations reward time on foot, not simply a rapid circuit of map markers. A short scene can compress a long approach, and a camera can make an exposed edge appear easier to reach than it is. Choose the walk that suits your group and the conditions, leaving the exact camera angle secondary to a safe and considerate visit.
Some screen connections have a specific story attached. The official trail identifies Lower Voe's Sail Loft as Hattie's accommodation in series one, with further filming in series three. Scalloway's castle and harbour form part of the series five action involving Sandy and a boat. Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary appears in series four, but remains a rescue operation where the team's arrangements and animal care determine a visit. These are different kinds of places, not interchangeable attractions. A public village walk does not include entry to booked accommodation, a working harbour needs clear access, and a sanctuary appointment should never be assumed from its appearance in a drama.
The southern lighthouse visit also needs a clear distinction. Promote Shetland identifies the cafe location at the Sumburgh Head complex as the hotel used for Willow Reeves, while Sumburgh Hotel has a separate care-home role. The headland's lighthouse history and RSPB reserve make the outing worthwhile beyond that screen detail. Indoor facilities operate on their own seasonal programme, and summer seabirds are an interest rather than a guaranteed sighting. Jarlshof is a nearby archaeological attraction that can add depth to a South Mainland day, but being mentioned near a filming place is not proof of a screen credit of its own.
Not every scene was filmed on the islands. Promote Shetland describes Glasgow's contribution to interior filming, alongside the island exteriors that give the series its identity. The production therefore joins real places and constructed or borrowed spaces to tell a continuous story. This guide keeps that mainland production context as a short note rather than sending visitors towards studios or private premises. The same care applies to the outer islands. The documented filming connection to the Mousa Boat does not establish that every island feature reached by the service appears in an episode. Ann Cleeves' literary links to Fair Isle are also distinct from identifying a particular public filming venue.
Getting here is part of the plan. NorthLink's overnight ferry from Aberdeen arrives in Lerwick, while flights arrive at Sumburgh in the South Mainland. Those two gateways suggest different first days: a town walk after the ferry, or a measured southern outing after a flight, with transport and luggage arranged first. Book accommodation early because the choice is limited, and organise car hire or essential transfers alongside it. Public buses can serve useful journeys, but a main-road stop may still leave a substantial walk to the coast. Inter-island ferries and seasonal boat trips have their own arrangements, so allow flexibility instead of attaching every location to one uninterrupted driving circuit.
These places add context but are not filming-location claims.

The television drama draws on Ann Cleeves’ Shetland books. The novels and screen stories have different structures, so a literary setting does not prove a real filming venue.
