How Eshaness cliffs and lighthouse appears

Eshaness supplies some of Shetland's most distinctive coastal imagery. The official North Mainland trail identifies the area with the fictional Pit of Biddista and describes repeated dramatic and scenic filming along this coast. That supports a landscape visit rather than a hunt for one precise camera position. The cliffs, sea and lighthouse area can be recognised without entering croft properties that also appear in the wider television geography. Individual episode numbers are not assigned from the general filming account.

The real place

What you can visit

The peninsula's volcanic rocks and exposed sea cliffs are important in their own right. Interpretation and an official circular walk help explain the layers visible along the coast. The lighthouse gives a clear landmark at the road end, but it does not turn the surrounding ground into a controlled viewing platform. Wind, uneven surfaces and the cliff edge all need attention. Choose a route suited to the day's conditions and your group, allowing the landscape to determine how far you walk rather than trying to reproduce a dramatic television viewpoint.

The best screen comparison is the broader coastline. A photograph taken from secure ground captures its character without requiring the exposed position implied by a camera angle.

Getting there.

The official trail follows the B9078 to the lighthouse car park and recommends the Eshaness circular walk. Use that public starting point rather than turning into residential approaches along the coast. A North Mainland day involves a substantial return journey, so allow daylight for driving as well as walking. Keep well back from the cliff edge and leave room for other vehicles at the road end.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

What fictional place does Eshaness represent?

The official trail connects it with the Pit of Biddista, alongside other dramatic and scenic use of the coastline.

Where should a visit begin?

Use the public lighthouse car park and the official walking information rather than private croft entrances.

Is the cliff walk suitable in all weather?

No. Exposed ground, wind and visibility can change the outing. Choose the length and route according to conditions.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Lower Voe can provide a village stop on a North Mainland itinerary. Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary is a separate visit that needs agreement with its team, not an automatic addition to a cliff walk.
