How Lower Voe and the Sail Loft appears

Lower Voe's Sail Loft is identified by the official North Mainland trail as Hattie's accommodation in series one, with further use in series three. The useful public visit is the village and pier setting rather than entry to the accommodation itself. The same trail describes the building's present use as a camping booth, so a television credit should not be confused with permission to look inside. Keep the building's role in the story distinct from the working and residential spaces around it.

The real place

What you can visit

Voe's sheltered waterside setting makes it a different stop from the exposed Northmavine cliffs. The local trading history gives the village depth beyond its screen appearance: the official account describes Adie's business combining activities such as cloth, knitwear, provisions and fish curing. A short public walk around Lower Voe can put those connections into context without expecting surviving buildings to function as a reconstruction of the old trade. The pier and neighbouring settlement are still used, so leave access clear and respect any areas reserved for work or accommodation.

Keep your attention on the public waterside setting. The Sail Loft's screen identity is interesting, but it remains a real building with a present-day use rather than an open room set.

Getting there.

The official trail takes the B9071 towards Lower Voe and suggests parking by the pier before exploring on foot. Use only a suitable signed public space and leave working access unobstructed. It is a useful short stop during a North Mainland drive, rather than a reason to stop on the main A970. Entry to booked accommodation requires its own arrangements.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

What does the Sail Loft play?

The official television trail identifies it as Hattie's accommodation in series one and notes further filming in series three.

Can I look around inside?

The building has a present-day accommodation use. A public village walk does not include entry.

Is this a cliff location?

No. Lower Voe is a sheltered waterside village, providing a different sort of setting from Eshaness.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Combine Lower Voe with an Eshaness outing if daylight and weather allow. Use the village break to interrupt the longer drive, leaving the cliff walk enough time of its own.
