How Scousburgh Sands appears

Scousburgh Sands is a documented filming beach, especially associated in the official South Mainland trail with discoveries in series five. The source identifies the sand rather than promising a single fixed camera position. It is also called Spiggie Beach, but should not be confused with nearby Peerie Spiggie, which has its own screen connection. Keeping those names separate helps a visitor avoid assuming that every photograph or scene around the Spiggie area shows the same stretch of coast.

The real place

What you can visit

The beach sits near Loch of Spiggie, a freshwater lagoon whose wildlife interest offers a different way to spend time in the area. The RSPB reserve information provides context for the loch and its birds, while a beach walk focuses on the open shore. These are related parts of the landscape but not the same access route or activity. The RSPB prohibits access to the loch shore; use its public-road viewpoints or accessible hide instead, without crossing farmland for a closer view. A quiet shoreline visit does not require entering the sea or approaching wildlife.

Use both names, Scousburgh Sands and Spiggie Beach, when checking a map, then confirm that the route points to this beach rather than Peerie Spiggie or the loch.

Promote Shetland: official television location trail ↗
Getting there.

The official trail approaches through the Spiggie area and follows the signed rough track for Scousburgh Sands. Use the designated beach parking and keep gates and agricultural access clear. This is a rural beach approach, so allow for the track and final walk rather than planning a timed roadside photograph. Do not assume a main-road bus serves the parking area itself.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

What is its other name?

The official trail also calls Scousburgh Sands Spiggie Beach. Nearby Peerie Spiggie is a different place.

Which series is documented here?

Promote Shetland particularly identifies discoveries filmed for series five, without assigning individual episode numbers.

Is Loch of Spiggie the same stop?

The loch is a nearby wildlife interest with its own reserve information. Do not assume the beach track provides access to every part of the reserve.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

St Ninian's Isle provides a contrasting sand formation elsewhere in the South Mainland. Sumburgh Head can complete a coastal day if you leave enough time for its separate uphill approach and visitor facilities.
