How The Hermitage appears

The Hermitage’s woodland becomes North Carolina in season five, appearing in episodes eleven and twelve. This is a landscape connection rather than a surviving house or settlement set. Trees, paths and the Falls of Braan surroundings provide the atmosphere for the American story, while the real place remains in Perthshire. The woodland setting and its changing views matter more than a single standing position. Follow the paths to experience the trees, water and enclosure that give these scenes their atmosphere.

The real place

What you can visit

The real Hermitage lies near Dunkeld and is a public woodland landscape cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. Its paths and the Falls of Braan make it a destination for a walk independent of television. Water, trees and changing ground conditions shape the experience more than façades or rooms. The visitor should distinguish a managed woodland route from an unrestricted invitation to explore any river edge. Dunkeld provides the local context, while the Highland Folk Museum and Glencoe belong to different travel legs rather than a compact nearby screen circuit.

Let the Falls of Braan and the woodland route set the pace; a satisfying walk is a better goal than finding an unsupported camera pin.

Getting there.

Check the Trust’s current path and visitor notices, allow for weather and use the designated parking arrangements. Choose a woodland route that suits your party and footwear, following closures or diversions rather than searching off-path for a scene. Choose an approach that suits your party, rather than assuming all woodland paths offer the same surface or gradient. Ask for current route advice where mobility or river conditions matter, and keep your walking plans proportionate to daylight and weather.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Is this actually North Carolina?

No. The Hermitage is in Perthshire and supplies woodland used to represent North Carolina. Its screen role shows Scotland doubling for the American story; it does not mean the real paths or landscape share the fictional geography of Fraser’s Ridge.

Can I find the exact filming spot?

Treat this as a woodland location to experience along its public paths, rather than a hunt for one exact standing position. The Falls of Braan and surrounding trees provide the wider setting; stay on the visitor routes and keep away from unsafe river edges.

Can I combine this with every Highland location?

The locations are spread widely. The Hermitage works with Dunkeld or an A9 journey; Newtonmore’s Highland Folk Museum and the A82 landscape at Glencoe need separate travel planning. Treating them as neighbouring pins would leave too little time for the places themselves.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Build the stop around Dunkeld, or use it as a deliberate A9 travel break; leave Newtonmore and Glencoe to separate Highland journey stages.
