How Dean Castle appears
Dean Castle becomes Beaufort Castle in Outlander’s second season, when Jamie and Claire seek Lord Lovat’s support. The fictional home belongs to the Highland political story, but the real filming location is in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. The castle’s architecture supplies the visual identity while the programme gives it a different name and family context. A visit is most useful when those two histories remain distinct: the screen association is one way into understanding the building rather than its complete identity.
The real place
What you can visit
The castle stands within Dean Castle Country Park, giving the destination both a historic-building focus and a wider outdoor setting. Public grounds and access to castle interiors are separate matters. Conservation and museum arrangements can affect which parts of the building are available, so the country park is an important part of a flexible plan. Spend time in the grounds as well as considering the façade, rather than expecting every room implied by the fictional Beaufort household to be visitable.
Use the Beaufort association to introduce the visit, then follow the castle’s own museum and park interpretation.
VisitScotland ↗Check the current castle and country park information before travelling, including building access notices. Ask about interior routes and any steps if these affect your visit. Keep to open public areas and respect barriers even if a familiar view lies beyond them. Plan enough time for the grounds so that a restricted room does not determine the success of the outing.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Is this the actual Beaufort Castle?
Dean Castle plays the fictional Beaufort setting in the series. The visitor location is in Kilmarnock, rather than the Highland location suggested by Lord Lovat’s story.
Can I assume the entire castle interior is accessible?
No. Museum use, conservation and current access arrangements determine the visitor route. Check directly if a castle interior is the main reason for your journey.
Does a grounds visit offer more than a photograph?
The castle sits within a country park, allowing an outdoor visit alongside the building. Plan for both elements instead of relying on access to one particular screen-facing room.
Plan your visit
Build it into the day.
Kilmarnock is the natural local base; Dunure can be a separate Ayrshire screen stop with a measured journey between them.
