How Drumlanrig Castle appears

Drumlanrig Castle supplies Bellhurst Manor’s exterior and rooms in Outlander’s second-season story. The fictional property is associated with the Duke of Sandringham, while the real castle is near Thornhill in Dumfries and Galloway. Its pink-sandstone appearance helps give Bellhurst a recognisable identity. The kitchen connection belongs to Callendar House, so a visit to Drumlanrig should not be sold as access to every part of the fictional manor. The series assembles that household from more than one Scottish heritage location.

The real place

What you can visit

Drumlanrig is a destination estate with a house, collections, gardens and trails. These offer a wider visit than the manor scenes alone, but the experience depends on which parts are open and included in the current visitor arrangements. House tours and an outdoor estate outing are different commitments. Its position in Dumfries and Galloway also matters: this is a separate journey from the Ayrshire coastal locations, rather than a small extension to a short harbour visit.

Confirm the type of visit first, since a grounds-only outing is a different experience from a house tour.

Getting there.

Check the current calendar and whether the available visit includes the house, gardens or estate grounds. Book an appropriate tour if entering the house is essential. Ask about the tour route and accessibility before committing, and allow time for the approach to Thornhill as well as the estate itself. Keep weather alternatives in mind when planning an outdoor visit.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Is Drumlanrig the whole of Bellhurst Manor?

It supplies the exterior and rooms, while Callendar House supplies the kitchen connection. The fictional manor combines places that visitors need to plan as separate real locations.

Does every estate visit include the house?

Visitor arrangements can distinguish house tours, gardens and estate grounds. Read the current booking description and choose the option that includes the part you actually want to see.

Is this a quick addition to Dunure?

It is better treated as a separate Dumfries and Galloway destination. Give the journey and the estate enough time instead of building an overly compressed Ayrshire itinerary.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Use Thornhill or the Dumfries area for the wider trip, keeping Dunure and Dean Castle as another regional branch.
