How Linlithgow Palace appears
Linlithgow Palace supplies the entrance and passages of Wentworth Prison in season one. Episode fifteen uses selected palace spaces rather than a complete prison complex, building the setting through entrances, passages and tight views. These scenes carry difficult material, so the architectural connection can be explained without recreating distressing action. Ardsmuir, Jamie’s later prison setting, belongs to Craigmillar Castle. Seeing the palace as a group of carefully chosen corridors and approaches makes better sense than imagining a complete preserved Wentworth set behind the entrance.
The real place
What you can visit
The real building is a Scottish royal palace at Kirkgate in Linlithgow, with a history quite different from the fictional prison. Its scale and surviving stone spaces make it a substantial heritage visit in its own right. A screen-led visitor can begin with the approach, then follow the authorised route to understand how existing architecture suggested imprisonment. Some rooms and levels may be restricted for conservation. The palace’s presence within the town also makes it a natural anchor for a wider Linlithgow visit instead of a brief roadside photograph.
Look first at the entrance and the way passages compress the view; that is more informative than searching for an entire fictional prison layout.
Historic Environment Scotland ↗Check Historic Scotland’s current admission and access notices before travelling, particularly if a particular passage or upper level is central to your plans. Use current transport information for the journey to Linlithgow, and check the onward walk to the palace before choosing a train or bus. Ask the operator about stairs and accessible alternatives rather than assuming palace corridors form a level circuit. Follow barriers even when a recognisable screen angle appears beyond them.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Is Linlithgow really Wentworth Prison?
It represents parts of Wentworth on screen. The real building is Linlithgow Palace, and the supported filming claim concerns entrances and passages. Its historical identity should not be replaced by the fictional prison when interpreting the site.
Is this also Ardsmuir?
No. Craigmillar Castle supplies Ardsmuir in season three. Linlithgow’s connection is Wentworth in season one, including the passages and entrance seen in episode fifteen. The two sites offer different architecture and different moments in the narrative.
Are the filmed passages guaranteed to be open?
No complete route guarantee is supported. Conservation or visitor restrictions may affect individual spaces, so check current notices and enquire about an essential area. Admission to the palace is not a promise that every photographed production space can be entered.
