How Powis Street, Welsh Streets appears

Watery Lane is where the series begins: the smoky, cobbled Small Heath street outside the Shelby house and betting shop, which Tommy rides along in the very first episode. The story puts it in Birmingham. The real street is Powis Street, one of the Victorian terraces known as the Welsh Streets in Toxteth, Liverpool. At the time of filming many of its houses stood empty, which made it practical to dress with period shopfronts, mud and smoke. It was used as Watery Lane in the opening episode and broadly across the first three series.

The real place

What you can visit

Today Powis Street is a residential street again. The Welsh Streets were refurbished after filming, starting around 2017, and the terraces are now occupied homes. Nothing of the Peaky Blinders dressing remains and there is no betting shop, plaque or visitor point. What you can still see is the long, straight line of red-brick terraces that made it such a convincing period street. Walk along the public pavement, take a general view of the street and move on. Do not identify, photograph or approach any particular house or resident.

This is someone's front door, not a set. Keep to the pavement, keep noise down, and leave without knocking or posing on doorsteps.

Getting there.

Powis Street is in the L8 area, south of the city centre near Princes Park. It is a residential street with permit and on-street parking only, so arrive on foot, by bus or by taxi from the centre. Pavements are level. Visit in daylight and keep groups small and quiet.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Is Watery Lane a real street?

Watery Lane is fictional. On screen it was Powis Street in Liverpool's Welsh Streets, dressed to look like 1919 Small Heath in Birmingham.

Can I visit the Shelby house?

No. The houses on Powis Street are private homes and the interiors were never open to visitors. You can walk the public pavement and look along the street.

Does it still look like the show?

Only in outline. The street was refurbished after filming and the period dressing, mud and shopfronts were temporary. The terrace shape is the part you will recognise.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Pair with Liverpool Cathedral, about a mile north, and St George's Hall in the city centre.
