How Stanley Dock appears

Stanley Dock provided the brick lanes and dockside streets around the Garrison, the Shelbys' local pub, in the first series. The climax of series one, when the family faces Billy Kimber's gang in the sixth episode, used the dock's cobbles and warehouse walls. The story sets these scenes beside Birmingham's canals; the real place is a nineteenth-century dock on Liverpool's waterfront, whose huge brick warehouses gave the production a ready-made industrial backdrop. The Garrison's interior was a set, and no single real pub played it.

The real place

What you can visit

Stanley Dock sits at the north end of Liverpool's historic docks, where the Leeds and Liverpool Canal drops down to the river. The vast Tobacco Warehouse and the older warehouses around the dock are being converted, and one now houses a hotel, so parts of the area are private property or building sites. You can see the dock basin, the canal locks and the warehouse frontages from public roads and paths. There is no visitor centre or Peaky Blinders marker, and the site changes as redevelopment continues.

Respect construction fencing and private hotel grounds. The best views are from public pavements beside the canal locks and dock edge.

Getting there.

The dock is on Regent Road, about half an hour's walk north of the Pier Head along the waterfront. Buses run along the dock road. Parking is limited; the hotel has its own car park for guests. Ground is mostly level but cobbled in places. Keep out of fenced building areas.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Was the Garrison pub filmed at Stanley Dock?

The lanes around the Garrison were filmed here. The pub's interior was a set, and no real Liverpool or Birmingham pub serves as the Garrison.

Which episode used Stanley Dock?

The confrontation in series one, episode six, was filmed at the dock. Other scenes in the area may also use it, but that is the episode linked here.

Can I go into the warehouses?

Only where a business is open to the public, such as the hotel. The rest of the warehouses are private or being redeveloped.
