How Corsham High Street appears

Corsham High Street plays Truro, the county town where Ross and George do business, attend balls and argue in the street. With modern signs and road markings hidden, the run of stone houses and shops passes easily for a Georgian Cornish town. The harbour side of Truro was filmed separately at Charlestown, so the fictional town is a composite of a Wiltshire street and a Cornish dock. In the story, Truro is in the heart of Cornwall; the real street is between Bath and Chippenham.

The real place

What you can visit

Corsham is a small market town with one of the best-preserved high streets in Wiltshire, lined with 17th and 18th-century houses, the Flemish weavers' cottages and independent shops and cafés. At its western end are the gates of Corsham Court, a private stately home that opens to the public on some days. Peacocks from the Court often wander into the streets. The High Street is a public street, so you can walk it any time; shops keep normal trading hours.

This is a busy, lived-in town centre: stay on the pavement for photos and don't block shop or house doorways.

There are pay car parks off the High Street, signed from the A4. Chippenham railway station is about four miles away, with buses to Corsham. The street is level but has some uneven pavements. Great Chalfield Manor and Bowood are each about 20 minutes away by car.
