How Great Chalfield Manor appears
Great Chalfield Manor is Killewarren, the house of Ray Penvenen and his niece Caroline, who becomes an important figure in Dwight Enys's story. The story places Killewarren in Cornwall, not far from the other great houses of the Poldark world; the real house is in the Wiltshire countryside between Bradford on Avon and Melksham. Its gables, oriel windows and walled gardens give the Penvenens a grander, older home than Nampara, which suits Caroline's wealth and position.
The real place
What you can visit
Great Chalfield is a late medieval manor house with a moat, a small parish church beside it and Arts and Crafts gardens laid out in the early 20th century. It belongs to the National Trust but is still lived in by the family who look after it, so the house is shown by guided tour on advertised days, and the garden opens on set dates. Check the National Trust page for the current calendar and prices before travelling, as opening is limited.
This is a family home as well as a National Trust property: visit only on open days, and join the guided tour rather than wandering round the outside of the house.
National Trust: Poldark's filming locations ↗The manor is down narrow lanes about three miles south-west of Melksham, with a small car park. Bradford on Avon railway station is about three miles away; there is no direct bus. The house has steps and uneven historic floors; ask the National Trust about access for the garden and church.
