How Bowood House and Gardens lake appears

When the story moves to London in series 4 and 5, the Poldarks and London society stroll in Hyde Park beside the Serpentine. Those scenes were filmed at Bowood, where a Capability Brown lake and open parkland make a convincing Georgian London park. Bowood confirms filming in both series, and Visit Wiltshire identifies it as the Hyde Park double. Some filming may have used parts of the estate that are not open to visitors, so the public garden walks give the general view rather than every exact angle.

The real place

What you can visit

Bowood is the home of the Marquis of Lansdowne, set in parkland landscaped by Capability Brown around a long lake, with a Doric temple, a cascade and pleasure grounds. The house and gardens open to paying visitors in season, with a café and a large adventure playground. The woodland gardens open separately in spring when the rhododendrons flower. Check the Bowood website for current opening dates and prices.

Stick to the public garden routes: much of the wider estate, including its golf course and hotel, is private or for guests only.

Getting there.

Bowood is signed from the A4 between Calne and Chippenham, with free parking for ticket holders. Chippenham railway station is about five miles away. The main paths around the house and lake are mostly firm, but some lakeside walks are uneven; Bowood's website has access details.
