How Penmachno Roman Bridge appears

VisitBritain lists the Roman Bridge at Penmachno among House of the Dragon's north Wales locations, used as a crossing in the Westeros countryside. A single stone arch over a rocky river in a wooded valley needs little dressing to look medieval, and the production used it for riders on the move. The scene is not tied to a named episode, and the story places it somewhere in the Westerosi countryside rather than at a named castle or town. The real bridge spans the Afon Machno in a quiet valley a few miles from Betws-y-Coed.

The real place

What you can visit

Despite its name, the Roman Bridge is generally thought to date from long after the Roman period; it is a narrow, single-span stone packhorse bridge over the Afon Machno, now a listed structure. A modern road bridge stands alongside it. The river runs over rocks and small falls beneath the arch, and the surrounding woodland is part of the Gwydyr Forest area. It is free to see from the road and riverside path at any time.

Do not stand on the parapet or climb the arch; the stones are old and the river below is rocky and fast after rain.

Getting there.

The bridge is on the minor road along the Afon Machno, about three miles south of Betws-y-Coed off the A5, before the village of Penmachno. Parking is very limited on the narrow lane, so park considerately or walk from a nearby lay-by. Betws-y-Coed has a station on the Conwy Valley line.
