How Ogwen Valley and Ffynnon Llugwy appears

Ogwen's broad glacial valley, with Llyn Ogwen at its heart and the peaks of Tryfan and the Glyderau above, gave House of the Dragon its sweeping shots of riders crossing the country in the second season. For the third season, VisitBritain names Ffynnon Llugwy, a remote reservoir in a cwm of the Carneddau on the north side of the valley. The story places these scenes in the wilder country of Westeros rather than at a named castle; in reality you are in the north of Snowdonia National Park on the A5. Expect raw mountain scenery rather than any trace of the production.

The real place

What you can visit

The Ogwen Valley is one of Snowdonia's busiest walking areas. The A5 runs past Llyn Ogwen, with roadside parking and a visitor centre and café at Ogwen Cottage at the western end of the lake. Short walks lead to Llyn Idwal, and serious scrambles go up Tryfan. Ffynnon Llugwy is reached by a long, steady climb on a tarmac service track from the A5 east of the lake, then rough paths; it is a remote upland reservoir for equipped walkers only. All of it is free open country.

Mountain weather changes fast. Take a map, waterproofs and warm layers, tell someone your route, and turn back in low cloud or high wind.

Getting there.

Ogwen is on the A5 about 10 minutes from Bethesda and 15 from Capel Curig. Roadside lay-bys and the Ogwen car park fill early in good weather, so arrive early or use the Sherpa'r Wyddfa buses. The lakeside and the Llyn Idwal path are easiest; the climb to Ffynnon Llugwy takes a couple of hours each way.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Was House of the Dragon filmed in the Ogwen Valley?

Yes. VisitBritain's north Wales film itinerary names the Ogwen Valley as a second-season location, used for riders crossing Westeros.

How do you get to Ffynnon Llugwy?

On foot, by a long climb on a service track from the A5 east of Llyn Ogwen, then rough upland paths. It is a remote mountain reservoir for walkers with boots, maps and waterproofs.

Is there parking in the Ogwen Valley?

Yes, in lay-bys along the A5 and at the Ogwen Cottage car park, but spaces fill early on fine days. The Sherpa'r Wyddfa buses are a good alternative.
