Plan a responsible visit

Visiting Doc Martin filming locations

Start in Port Isaac. Everything that matters in Portwenn is within a short walk of the harbour, so one morning covers the village, and a full day lets you add Port Gaverne, Port Quin or Pencarrow. Summer is busy; spring and early autumn are calmer and the light is good.

The village is built on two steep valley sides around a small harbour. Visitors park at the top and walk down, and the lanes are narrow, uneven and in places stepped. Plan a pace that suits everyone in your group and leave time for the climb back up.

Doc Martin's locations are a mix of public places, businesses and private homes. The harbour, coves, coast path, church and Pencarrow are open to visitors on their own terms. Fern Cottage, the Police House and Doyden Castle are holiday lets, and several other screen houses are homes. See them from public space and let residents and guests get on with their day.

By rail

Bodmin Parkway on the main line from London Paddington and Plymouth is the nearest station to Port Isaac, around 17 miles away by road. From there you need a bus connection or a taxi. Book taxis ahead in summer. For Altarnun, Launceston has no railway; Bodmin Parkway is again the nearest station.

Buses

Local buses link Port Isaac with Wadebridge, Camelford and the surrounding villages, with connections towards Bodmin. Services are less frequent in the evenings, on Sundays and in winter, so check the current timetable before planning a car-free day, especially for Port Quin, which has no regular bus.

Parking and driving

In Port Isaac, use Cornwall Council's New Road car park (PL29 3SB) at the top of the village; it is open 24 hours and charges by the hour. Do not drive down into the lower village. Port Quin has a National Trust car park (PL29 3SU). Pencarrow has its own visitor parking. At Port Gaverne and Altarnun, roadside parking is limited, so park considerately and keep gateways and lanes clear.

Accessibility.

Port Isaac is hard going for anyone with limited mobility: the streets are steep, narrow and sometimes stepped, and the harbour floor is sand and rock. Ask your accommodation or Cornwall Council about Blue Badge parking before you travel. Pencarrow publishes access information for its house and gardens. The paths at Port Quin and around Doyden Castle are rough and close to cliff edges.

Private means private.

Fern Cottage, Port Gaverne Beach House and Doyden Castle are holiday lets, and the houses used for Louisa, Aunt Ruth and Mrs Tishell's chemist are private homes. Look from the public street, don't go up to doors or into gardens, don't photograph through windows and keep doorways and lanes clear. The surgery interiors were sets in a barn on a private farm, which has no public access.

Port Isaac and Port Gaverne coast

Half a day · On foot

The village and harbour in the morning, then the coast path half a mile east to the cove at Port Gaverne and the Police House cottage.

  2. The Platt and harbour · Portwenn's harbour square, where village life plays out
  3. Port Gaverne · Coastal scenes around Portwenn

Check tide times if you want to use the beaches. The coast path between the two coves is short but steep in places. Look at the Police House from the public cove only.

Doc Martin by car

Full day · Car

A driving day linking the coast and inland locations: Port Isaac early, Doyden Castle at Port Quin, then Pencarrow and Altarnun.

  1. Port Isaac · Portwenn, the fictional village at the heart of the series
  2. Doyden Castle · Mrs Tishell's cliff-top hideaway in the Series 5 finale

  4. St Nonna's Church, Altarnun · Martin and Louisa's wedding church in Series 6

Check Pencarrow's opening days before choosing a date, as the house opens seasonally. The lanes to Port Quin are narrow. Altarnun is a short detour from the A30, so it works well at the end of the day if you are heading east.
