How Portwenn's shopfronts appears

Portwenn's shops are real Port Isaac buildings with temporary signs. The Liberal Club building supplied the exterior of the village shop, and the former Central Garage on New Road became the fruit and veg shop. Both appear as part of the everyday traffic of the series rather than in single famous scenes: characters pass them, stop to talk outside and carry on down the hill. The shop interiors seen on screen were not necessarily filmed inside these buildings, and the signs were removed when filming finished.

The real place

What you can visit

Neither building is a visitor attraction or a set. The Liberal Club is on the way down from the top of the village towards the harbour, and the old garage frontage is on New Road near the car park. Expect ordinary present-day buildings that may look quite different from the dressed versions in the series, and remember that businesses and tenants change. Look from the street, keep entrances clear and do not go inside unless the building is open to the public for its own business.

These are working buildings used by local people. Keep entrances and the road clear, especially on New Road where traffic runs.

Getting there.

Park in Cornwall Council's New Road car park (PL29 3SB) at the top of the village and walk down; the lower streets are steep, narrow and not suitable for visitors' cars. The walk to the harbour takes about ten minutes downhill and longer on the way back up. There are steps and steep gradients throughout, so a step-free route to every frontage cannot be promised. Bodmin Parkway is the nearest main-line station, with an onward bus or taxi. The New Road frontage is the first stop on the walk down from the car park; the Liberal Club comes next on the way to the harbour.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Is the Portwenn village shop a real shop?

Its exterior was the Liberal Club building in Port Isaac, dressed with temporary signs. It is not a shop selling Doc Martin goods.

Where was the fruit and veg shop?

The former Central Garage frontage on New Road, close to the main car park at the top of the village.

Will they look like they do on TV?

Probably not exactly. Signs and window displays were added for filming and removed afterwards, and the buildings' present use can change.

Can I go inside?

Only if the building is open for its own business. Neither is a filming attraction, so treat them as private premises otherwise.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

They are natural first stops on a walk from the New Road car park down to the Platt, the Golden Lion and Roscarrock Hill.
