How Port Isaac appears
Portwenn does not exist: Port Isaac plays it. The harbour, the slate-hung cottages climbing the valley sides and the lanes running down to the water appear in almost every episode, from Martin's arrival in 2004 to the last Christmas special in 2022. Dressing changed shop signs, so the chemist, the village shop, the fruit and veg shop and the pub all carry fictional names on screen. Interiors were mostly filmed elsewhere, at a converted barn on a private farm nearby, so the village supplies the outside world of the series rather than the rooms. The lanes have changed little, and many views are easy to match.
The real place
What you can visit
Port Isaac is a working fishing village with a small harbour, a lifeboat station, pubs, cafés and galleries. Fishing boats still land on the slipway, and the village is busy with visitors from spring to autumn. Everything worth seeing from the series is on public streets and the harbour, so there is nothing to book. Several screen houses are private homes or holiday lets, so look from the street and move on. Allow two to three hours for a walk round the village with a stop for food, and more if you add the coast path to Port Gaverne.
The lanes are narrow and some are used by residents' vehicles and delivery vans. Keep doorways clear and stand aside for traffic.
Visit Cornwall: Doc Martin locations ↗Park in Cornwall Council's New Road car park (PL29 3SB) at the top of the village and walk down; the lower streets are steep, narrow and not suitable for visitors' cars. The walk to the harbour takes about ten minutes downhill and longer on the way back up. There are steps and steep gradients throughout, so a step-free route to every frontage cannot be promised. Bodmin Parkway is the nearest main-line station, with an onward bus or taxi.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Is Portwenn a real place?
No. Portwenn is fictional. Port Isaac in north Cornwall supplies almost all of its village scenes, with Port Gaverne, Port Quin and other Cornish places used for particular episodes.
Can you drive into Port Isaac?
Visitors should park at the New Road car park at the top of the village. The lower lanes are too steep and narrow for visiting traffic and parking there is very limited.
How long do you need?
Two to three hours covers the main Doc Martin frontages and the harbour with a stop for lunch. A full day lets you add Port Gaverne and part of the coast path.
Is there a guided Doc Martin walk?
Brit Movie Tours runs an independent 90-minute Doc Martin walk in Port Isaac. It is not an official ITV tour and does not include private interiors.
Plan your visit
Build it into the day.
Walk on to the Platt and harbour, the Golden Lion and the view of Fern Cottage on Roscarrock Hill, then follow the coast path half a mile east to Port Gaverne.
