How Doyden Castle appears

In Series 5, Episode 8, Ever After, Mrs Tishell disappears with Martin and Louisa's baby, and the search ends at Doyden Castle, a small castellated folly on the cliffs near Port Quin. Its isolated position on the headland, with the sea on three sides, gives the finale its tension. This is one of the few Doc Martin locations tied by the sources to a specific episode, and it is well away from Port Isaac, so it is a deliberate excursion rather than a stop on the village walk.

The real place

What you can visit

Doyden Castle is a 19th-century folly on Doyden Point, now a National Trust holiday cottage. Only booked guests can go inside, but the headland around it is crossed by public paths and the South West Coast Path, so you can see the exterior from a respectful distance. The walk out from the National Trust car park at Port Quin is short but rough, and the cliffs are unfenced. Port Quin itself is a tiny, quiet cove with almost no facilities, so bring what you need.

Stay on the path, well back from the cliff edge, and keep dogs on leads near livestock. The castle is let to guests, so keep away from its door and windows.

Getting there.

Use the National Trust car park at Port Quin (PL29 3SU) and follow the signed paths onto the headland. Port Quin is a short drive west of Port Isaac on narrow lanes, or a demanding walk along the South West Coast Path. The paths are steep, rough and close to cliff edges, so a step-free visit is not possible.
