How St Nonna's Church, Altarnun appears
After years of false starts, Martin and Louisa marry at the start of Series 6, in Sickness and Health, and St Nonna's Church in Altarnun is the church used for the wedding. On screen it stands in for Portwenn's parish church, although it is about 25 miles inland from Port Isaac. Accounts differ over which church was used for the couple's earlier, abandoned wedding in Series 3, so this guide links St Nonna's only to the Series 6 ceremony.
The real place
What you can visit
St Nonna's is a large medieval parish church, often called the Cathedral of the Moor, in a pretty village of stone cottages beside a stream on the north-eastern edge of Bodmin Moor. It is a working church, so services, weddings and funerals come first. When it is open, look for the carved bench ends inside, which are among the best in Cornwall. The churchyard and the packhorse bridge by the lychgate can be enjoyed at any reasonable time.
Worship comes first. If a service, wedding or funeral is taking place, come back later, and dress and behave as you would in any church.
Visit Cornwall: Doc Martin locations ↗Altarnun is just north of the A30, about eight miles west of Launceston. It is easiest by car; park considerately in the village and keep the narrow lanes and church gate clear. Public transport is limited, so check current bus times before relying on it. The church paths are historic and may be uneven.
