How St Mary’s Island and lighthouse appears

ITV’s final-series press pack gives St Mary’s Island a particularly clear connection: Brenda Blethyn describes filming a pointed exchange between Vera and Joe on its causeway. The confirmed scene is on the crossing near Whitley Bay, rather than an assumed lighthouse interior. This is a different tidal place from Holy Island farther north. The short strip of exposed road becomes part of the drama’s setting, while the real visitor experience depends on the local tide table and conditions rather than the uninterrupted access suggested by an edited scene.

The real place

What you can visit

St Mary’s Lighthouse stands on a small island linked to the mainland by a concrete causeway that disappears beneath the tide. The former lighthouse is a visitor attraction, while the surrounding coast is important for wildlife. You can see the tower from the mainland without crossing. That is a useful option when water covers the route or opening times do not fit your day. Keep a respectful distance from seals and do not leave the established visitor areas to gain a closer photograph. The lighthouse climb and the walk across the causeway involve different access considerations.

Decide on the crossing first, then fit the lighthouse visit around it. A mainland photograph is a complete alternative when the tide rules out access.

Getting there.

Use North Tyneside Council’s St Mary’s safe-crossing and opening information, not Holy Island’s timetable. Park at the mainland causeway car park and cross only when the route is safely open. Whitley Bay Metro is an approach to the wider town rather than a station beside the lighthouse, so arrange an onward bus or a substantial coastal walk. Return before water closes the causeway.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Which Vera scene was filmed here?

Brenda Blethyn’s ITV series-fourteen interview identifies an exchange between Vera and Joe on the St Mary’s Island causeway.

Can I use Holy Island’s crossing times?

No. St Mary’s has its own local causeway and council crossing information. The two tidal sites have separate conditions.

Can I see the lighthouse at high tide?

You can view it from the mainland. Do not cross a covered causeway to reach the island or attempt a shortcut over the shore.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Tynemouth and North Shields Fish Quay make a logical coastal day, with Metro connections and public waterfront walks between separate stops.
