How Newcastle Quayside and Millennium Bridge appears

Newcastle’s Quayside supplies the urban counterpart to Vera’s beaches and upland roads. The official tourism body includes it among the drama’s filming locations, and producer Margaret Mitchell has described using the Millennium Bridge in the background of shots. The waterside remains Newcastle and Gateshead rather than representing an invented southern city. Walk the public riverfront to understand the changing bridge views and the space between them. A familiar skyline does not mean every restaurant, court building or office beside it was used for filming.

The real place

What you can visit

The Tyne separates Newcastle’s north bank from Gateshead’s south bank, with the Millennium Bridge providing a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The banks offer long views towards several bridges, so the most useful visit is a walk rather than one isolated photograph. Gateshead’s cultural buildings and Newcastle’s older quayside frontages give the river two distinct edges. Cafés, galleries and other public venues make it easy to pause indoors. The bridge can tilt for river traffic, briefly changing the route, while the descent from Newcastle city centre is much steeper than the riverfront itself.

Cross the river and look back before continuing along the bank. The changing bridge outlines make the city setting clearer than photographing only from one side.

Getting there.

Newcastle Central station is a useful arrival point for a city walk. Choose a route down to the Quayside that suits your mobility rather than automatically taking the steepest stairways. The Millennium Bridge links the public north and south banks, subject to temporary closures for tilts. Allow time for the uphill return, or plan an onward city transport connection instead of retracing a steep descent.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Does Vera use the real Quayside?

The official tourism body includes it among the filming stops, and the producer has described using the Millennium Bridge in background shots.

Which side of the river should I visit?

Both are useful. The public Millennium Bridge links Newcastle and Gateshead, giving different views of the same skyline.

Is the walk from the station level?

The city centre stands above the Quayside. Select an appropriate route down and plan the return, especially if steps or steep gradients are difficult.
