How Kynance Cove appears
Kynance turns up in the coastal imagery of series 2, including opening shots and a procession along the shore after an arrest. The rock stacks, white sand and green-blue water make it one of the most recognisable backgrounds in the show. In the story these scenes belong to the coast near Ross's home on the north side of Cornwall; the real cove is near Lizard Point at the southern tip of mainland Britain. Kynance is not one of the named fictional places, so treat it as part of the show's Cornish scenery rather than a single setting.
The real place
What you can visit
Kynance is a National Trust cove of dark serpentine rock, with islands and stacks that are cut off at high tide. A steep path drops from the clifftop car park to the sand and a seasonal beach café. At low tide you can walk between the stacks; at high tide the beach almost disappears. In summer it is very busy, and the car park fills by mid-morning. Check the National Trust page for current parking and café arrangements.
Plan around low tide: the sand and the gaps between the stacks flood quickly as the tide turns, and people do get cut off. Keep off the cliff edges above the cove.
National Trust: Poldark's filming locations ↗Use the National Trust car park above the cove, signed from the A3083 just north of Lizard village; members park free. The path to the beach is steep and uneven, with steps near the bottom, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs. Walking from Lizard village along the coast path takes about 45 minutes.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Was Poldark filmed at Kynance Cove?
Yes. The National Trust and Visit Cornwall both list Kynance, which appears in coastal scenes in series 2, including opening images and a procession on the shore.
When is the best time to visit Kynance Cove?
Around low tide, and early in the day in summer. At high tide most of the beach is covered and the car park fills quickly in the holidays.
Is Kynance Cove accessible?
The clifftop viewpoints near the car park are reachable on fairly level ground, but the path down to the beach is steep and stepped.
