How Kynance Cove appears

In Second of His Name, the third episode of House of the Dragon, the war in the Stepstones grinds on, and Kynance Cove plays the beach where Daemon Targaryen's forces are camped. The cove's dark rock stacks, caves and pale sand make an otherworldly coast, and the production added tents, soldiers and the aftermath of battle. In the story the Stepstones lie between Westeros and Essos in the Narrow Sea; the real cove is on the west side of the Lizard peninsula, the southernmost point of mainland Britain. Kynance also features in Poldark, so Cornwall visitors can cover both series here.

The real place

What you can visit

Kynance Cove is a small National Trust beach framed by islands and stacks of serpentine rock, with turquoise water and caves at low tide. A café sits just above the beach. The sand is largely covered at high tide, so plan your visit around low water. The car park on the cliff top charges non-members by the hour, with free parking for National Trust members who register. In summer the cove is very busy and the car park often fills by late morning.

Check tide times before walking onto any beach or into a cave, keep back from cliff edges and wet rock, and turn back if the sea is rough. Phone signal can be patchy on this coast.

Getting there.

The car park is signed off the A3083 north of Lizard village, postcode TR12 7PJ. There is no vehicle access to the cove: it is about a 10-minute steep walk down with steps from the car park, and the climb back takes longer. The accessible toilet is at the car park. Bus 34 serves Lizard village, about two miles away.
