On screen

Turville is one of the villages identified as a Midsomer Murders filming location in the Chilterns National Landscape’s walking programme. The published route links it with Hambleden, Fingest and Frieth, giving the screen connection a useful geographical context. The interest here is the village and its surrounding hills, rather than a visitor centre or a permanent television set.

A short look around the public village centre can be followed by a countryside walk if you have suitable footwear and a current route map. The photograph on this page looks down towards Turville from the hill above. It shows how closely the settlement sits within its fields and wooded slopes.

That wider setting is worth noticing as well as individual façades: it helps explain why these neighbouring villages work together so naturally on screen. The church, village green and Bull & Butcher provide practical reference points for orienting yourself, without needing to search for private addresses.

Visiting Turville

Start with the public streets and green, keeping entrances clear for residents. The Chilterns visitor guide describes a footpath between the church and green leading uphill towards Cobstone Windmill. The landscape organisation also makes clear that the windmill is a private residence. Enjoy the hill and views from lawful paths; do not interpret a visible landmark as an invitation to enter its grounds.

For a longer outing, use an independently published walking route rather than treating an old festival description as turn-by-turn directions. The festival route passed through woodland and farmland and involved climbing out of the valley, so a circuit needs more preparation than a brief village stop.

Check the distance, gradient and return point before leaving the centre. In wet weather, choose footwear for rural paths and allow enough daylight to return comfortably. Parking and refreshments should be arranged around current signs and business information, with no assumption that a pub car park is available to everyone.

Fingest and Hambleden belong to the same documented screen landscape. Choose one further village or one complete marked walk, rather than repeatedly moving the car for individual cottages.
