Henley-on-Thames offers a town-and-river version of Midsomer rather than the isolated village-green setting. Official tourism identifies recurring town locations, including Gabriel Machin’s butcher shop and The Argyll, while Experience Oxfordshire records the town hall’s use for civic scenes and the regatta connection in Dead in the Water.

These different settings make a walking route more useful than a single photo pin. Begin with the town’s real geography and notice how a working shop, a public building and the riverside can be edited into one fictional community.

Visiting Henley-on-Thames

Use the regional visitor guide’s information about the self-guided Midsomer map available from the town’s Visitor Information Centre. Confirm the centre’s current arrangements before relying on collecting a paper copy. Keep the initial walk in central Henley, where you can combine recognised street locations with a look at the Thames.

The Chilterns National Landscape guide identifies the Thames Path through town and options to walk upstream or downstream. Choose a route and turnaround that suit your party rather than assuming every riverside section has the same surface or accessibility. Current path notices and the actual weather should guide any extension.

Plan your visit

Build this stop into the day.

Hambleden is a strong countryside companion, supported by the Chilterns guide’s Thames and Chilterns walking route from Henley. Download the full route if you intend to go on foot and check the distance and terrain before committing. Stonor Park provides an opening-led historic-house alternative, with tickets for its different visitor areas.

For a simpler rail-based visit, keep the day in Henley and add a checked river activity or longer town walk. One chosen extension will preserve time for the central locations and a relaxed meal.
