On screen
Ewelme is a village stop on the official Midsomer northern trail, which explicitly notes the film crew’s interest in the settlement. It also directs visitors towards the watercress beds and nature reserve. That combination makes Ewelme worth approaching as a place with its own landscape and history, rather than just a collection of possible screen façades.
The photographed church tower rises above trees and village rooftops, showing the relationship between the hillside buildings and the lower village. The watercress beds offer a different focus from a church or pub stop. The Chiltern Society, which manages them, describes a former commercial watercress site now conserved for wildlife.
The Chilterns National Landscape explains that the beds are fed by Ewelme Brook, a chalk stream. A village visit and a reserve visit can fit together, provided you distinguish the sections of the reserve that are normally accessible from those with arranged opening.
Visiting Ewelme
Check the Chiltern Society’s current watercress-beds information before setting out. Its site distinguishes the lower beds from the upper site and publishes separate opening or guided-visit arrangements. A past tourism leaflet should not be used as a timetable. If the upper beds are the main reason for visiting, confirm whether booking is needed for the date and season you have chosen.
There is no formal parking at the watercress centre. The Society directs motorists to park responsibly away from it and identifies a recreation-ground car park as an alternative. Allow for the walk back to the village and reserve rather than arriving expecting to park beside the entrance.
Bus services are described as restricted, and the rail station is not in the village, so check the complete onward and return journey before relying on public transport. Explore public lanes and lawful paths quietly. The village’s historic school and private properties are not visitor attractions; admire the wider setting without entering their grounds.
If including the church, check its own current access information and let worship or other activity take precedence. At the reserve, stay on the permitted routes and keep a respectful distance from wildlife and the water’s edge.

Wallingford provides a town-centre contrast and a documented Midsomer walking trail. Watlington is another northern-trail stop; choose one main town alongside Ewelme so the nature reserve receives time of its own.
