On screen

The Corn Exchange gives Wallingford’s Midsomer walk a recognisable theatre landmark. The official southern trail identifies the venue with Causton Playhouse, while the building’s own history explains its real transformation from a nineteenth-century corn exchange into an entertainment space. The Sinodun Players bought the derelict building and volunteers worked to create the theatre and cinema that operate today.

That continuing community life is worth noticing alongside the screen façade. A visit can be a short exterior comparison during the town trail, or an evening out chosen from the actual programme.

Visiting Wallingford Corn Exchange

For the exterior, include the Corn Exchange in a walk around the Market Place. For an interior experience, use the venue’s official booking programme, which covers cinema, drama, music and live screenings. Do not assume that a public performance grants a backstage tour or reproduces a filmed interior.

The venue describes a modern foyer and bar, an auditorium and rehearsal facilities, but those spaces serve performers and audiences. Choose an event you would enjoy in its own right, then plan arrival and any meal around the advertised start. The box office can answer practical questions before you travel.

Plan your visit

Build this stop into the day.

Wallingford Market Place and the town’s Midsomer leaflet are the natural daytime partners. If you book an evening performance, spend the earlier part of the day on a town walk, adding the riverside or Castle Gardens according to your interests. This lets you see the screen landmark and support the real cultural venue without treating the building as a set.

Keep longer countryside additions, such as Warborough or Dorchester, optional so that travel does not squeeze the booked show.
