Wallingford Market Place is one of the most useful places to begin exploring the real Causton. The town council’s visitor website identifies Wallingford as the original Causton location and recalls Barnaby walking around the square and crossing Wallingford Bridge. That gives the market place a stronger connection than simply resembling an English television town.
It also gives a visitor a clear centre from which to follow the published filming leaflet. Look at the square as a complete civic space, with its surrounding façades and routes into the adjoining streets, rather than expecting every shot to have been taken from one position.
Visiting Wallingford Market Place
Download the council’s Midsomer leaflet before arrival or visit the Town Information Centre for its walking and driving trail material. Start with an unhurried look around the Market Place, then follow the route to the Corn Exchange and the other central stops it identifies. The council’s broader visitor site also suggests independent shops, antique stores, Castle Gardens and the traces of the town’s Saxon past.
Choose one of those interests as a second layer to the walk, particularly if your party includes someone less concerned with television. Business interiors and museum visits require their own opening checks.
Plan your visit
Build this stop into the day.
The Corn Exchange is the immediate companion, combining a documented Causton Playhouse connection with a current theatre and cinema programme. A riverside walk or Castle Gardens can then broaden the visit without another drive. Warborough and Dorchester-on-Thames are options for a separate village extension within the council’s wider Midsomer countryside routes.
Treat driving time in the published trails as movement time, not the total length of your day: stops, food and walking require their own allowance.
