How Gosford Castle and Forest Park appears

In season three Robb Stark's army moves through the Riverlands after its early victories, and Gosford Castle supplied exterior scenes around his camp. The castle's battlements and the open ground in front of them give a sense of a lordly seat in the Riverlands, though its 19th-century neo-Norman style is far from the look of any castle built in the studio. In the story these scenes sit in the heart of Westeros near Riverrun; the real castle is in County Armagh, south of Markethill. Only exteriors were filmed, and the building on screen is easiest to recognise from the lawns in front.

The real place

What you can visit

Gosford Castle is a large Victorian-era mock-Norman castle, begun in 1819 for the Earls of Gosford. It has been converted into private apartments, so there is no public access inside or into the private gardens around it. The castle stands within Gosford Forest Park, which is open to the public, with woodland walks, a walled garden, rare-breed animals, a caravan and camping site and children's play areas. You can see the castle exterior from the forest park paths. Check the forest park's own page for car charges and opening times.

The castle is now private homes. Look from the public paths, keep off the private lawns and do not photograph residents' windows.
