How Binevenagh appears

Binevenagh's grassy plateau and cliff edge gave Game of Thrones the wide, empty country of the Dothraki Sea, where Daenerys is seen after her flight from Meereen and where the Dothraki find her. The camera looks out over a horizon of grass and sky, with the drop of the escarpment just off the frame. In the story the Dothraki Sea is a vast grassland on the continent of Essos, east of Westeros; the real place is a mountain above the Magilligan peninsula in County Londonderry, overlooking Lough Foyle and Donegal. The scene positions are on open hill ground and are not marked, so treat Binevenagh as a landscape to walk rather than a single spot.

The real place

What you can visit

Binevenagh is a basalt mountain whose cliffs drop steeply towards the coastal plain, forming the western end of the Causeway Coast and Glens area. A minor road climbs to a small lake and viewpoint near the top, and walks lead along the plateau edge. The views over Lough Foyle, Benone Strand and across to Donegal are outstanding on a clear day. There are no facilities on the plateau. Much of the surrounding land is grazing or forestry, so keep to obvious paths and close gates.

Mountain weather changes fast. Take a map, waterproofs and warm layers, tell someone your route, and turn back in low cloud or high wind.
