How Wells Cathedral appears

Wells Cathedral contributes different interiors across the two productions. The National Trust’s first-series map identifies Gray’s Inn among its roles. PBS names the cathedral as the double for Hampton Court’s Palace Chapel when Henry marries Jane Seymour in episode one of The Mirror and the Light. Those story settings are in and around London; the filming building is the cathedral in Somerset. A cathedral exterior does not itself prove a screen role, so this guide keeps the interior credits distinct from the surrounding city.

The real place

What you can visit

Wells is a working cathedral with a visitor programme fitted around services and events. The nave, architecture and surrounding close make it worth a longer stop even if a filming area is occupied or closed. Admission arrangements and tours are set by the cathedral, and parts of the visit can be unavailable during worship. Combine the building with a walk through the compact city centre. The Bishop’s Palace is nearby but has its own entrance and admission, so it is a separate visit.

Services take priority; a visitor ticket or donation does not guarantee entry to every filming space.

Getting there.

Wells has no railway station. Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa and Castle Cary are possible rail gateways with onward bus or taxi journeys. In town, the cathedral is about ten minutes on foot from the bus station. Drivers should use central public car parks and walk to Cathedral Green. Visitor hours operate around the year’s service calendar, with shorter access on some event days.
