How Montacute House appears
Montacute provides the screen version of Greenwich Palace, although the real house is in Somerset and belongs to a later architectural period. The National Trust identifies its grounds with the 2015 jousting sequences and its interiors with the returning royal court in 2024. In the later series, the production’s locations feature specifically identifies the window-side chess scene in episode four. The rooms and lawns are therefore parts of a constructed royal geography, not surviving rooms from the Greenwich palace.
The real place
What you can visit
The visitor experience is an Elizabethan house, garden and parkland on the edge of Montacute village. National Trust information says the upper floors remain closed during 2026; plan around the ground floor and outdoor spaces instead of expecting a complete interior circuit. The exterior gives a strong sense of the building’s scale even when particular rooms are inaccessible. Allow time for a garden walk and a village meal, with the house’s dated opening calendar deciding the order of your day.
Do not plan a visit around access to the chess room; conservation closures can limit the interior route.
National Trust ↗Yeovil Pen Mill and Yeovil Junction are the nearest useful rail gateways; arrange an onward taxi to Montacute rather than walking along rural roads. Drivers use the signed National Trust visitor car park. Allow roughly ten minutes from parking to the house approach, then longer for the gardens. House admission and garden opening follow separate seasonal arrangements on the venue page.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
What does Montacute House play in Wolf Hall?
Montacute House supplies Greenwich Palace in both series. This page keeps its real visitor setting in Montacute, Somerset separate from the story’s geography.
How should I arrive?
Use a Yeovil rail arrival with a booked taxi, or the signed estate parking if driving. Leave an arrival margin for the house approach and choose a day when your intended visitor areas open.
What can I see on a visit?
The present offer combines ground-floor rooms with gardens and parkland. Upper floors are closed during 2026, so a visit should not depend on seeing every interior associated with the production.
