How Farne Islands appears

ITV’s production notes confirm that Natural Selection, the opening film of series seven, was partly filmed on the Farne Islands. The investigation takes Vera into an island environment associated with wildlife and difficult access. The confirmed geographical scope here is the archipelago, rather than a promise that every visitor landing reproduces a particular shot. Watch the sea crossing and the birds as part of the setting: travel itself becomes a significant change from the roads and towns of Vera’s mainland cases.

The real place

What you can visit

The Farnes are a group of islands reached by boat from Seahouses, with seabird colonies, grey seals and buildings connected with their religious and maritime history. Inner Farne has a managed visitor route, while other tours remain on the water or use a different landing itinerary. These are sensitive wildlife places rather than unrestricted walking islands. Breeding birds can be very close to the path. Follow the ranger’s instructions and the boat crew’s advice, and keep bags closed so food and loose items do not create problems around nesting sites.

Choose the boat itinerary for what you want to see, including whether it actually lands. Keep a mainland alternative ready so a cancellation does not consume the day.

Getting there.

Book a boat departing Seahouses and distinguish a wildlife cruise from a landing trip. For Inner Farne, follow the National Trust’s harbour ticket or admission process before boarding. The usual landing season runs from spring into September and depends on weather and wildlife management. Parking is in Seahouses council car parks, with a walk to the harbour. Sea conditions can alter the day’s itinerary.

Will every boat land on an island?

No. Some tours sail around the islands. Landing trips have additional arrangements and depend on conditions and conservation requirements.
