How Craster harbour appears

Craster is included in the Guardian’s national travel account of Vera’s coastal locations. For this guide, the confirmed connection is the harbour village as a whole; it is not a licence to label every building or the nearby castle as part of a specific case. The small harbour gives a useful contrast to Seahouses, with the surrounding coastline quickly taking over once you leave the village. Visit as a public shoreline stop and keep the screen connection separate from the practical business of island travel.

The real place

What you can visit

Craster is a fishing village known for kippers and for the coastal path to Dunstanburgh Castle. The castle is reached on foot across the open coast, rather than by driving to its gates. This makes the harbour an effective starting point for a longer walk, but it also means the walk deserves its own time and suitable footwear. Fishing equipment and working areas remain part of village life. The sea-facing path can be breezy even when the harbour feels sheltered, and livestock may share the fields beside the route.

Decide at the car park whether this is a short harbour stop or a castle walk. The return distance matters more than the apparently close view of the ruins.

Getting there.

Use the public visitor car park at the village entrance and walk into the harbour. The route from Craster towards Dunstanburgh Castle is about 1.3 miles each way, before any extra exploring. Keep dogs under control around livestock and use the signed path. Farne Islands visitor boats depart from Seahouses, so do not plan an island cruise from Craster’s small working harbour.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Can I take a Farne Islands boat from Craster?

Plan visitor sailings from Seahouses. Craster’s harbour should not be treated as an interchangeable departure point.

How far is the castle walk?

The coastal route from Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle is roughly 1.3 miles each way, with additional walking around the site.

Is the castle itself the filming claim?

The location evidence used here concerns Craster. The castle walk is a nearby visitor option, without a claim about Vera filming inside the ruins.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Alnmouth provides another coast stop to the south. Seahouses is the correct mainland base for a Farne Islands sailing, with a separate harbour character.
