How Blanchland appears

Visit Northumberland confirms Blanchland as one of Vera’s filming villages. The evidence supports the village setting without assigning a named pub room, house or episode to a particular shot. Its enclosed stone centre gives the drama a different kind of landscape from the tidal islands and city bridges. A visit should focus on public village streets and the surrounding setting, leaving private thresholds alone. The small scale is part of its appeal: you can understand the place on foot without trying to reconstruct a vehicle route from a television edit.

The real place

What you can visit

Blanchland is a small stone village in the inland country south of the Tyne Valley, with a history tied to its former abbey. The village centre, church setting and surrounding walks reward a slower stop than the distance from Hexham might suggest. The Lord Crewe Arms is a real hotel and hospitality venue with its own arrangements, rather than an automatically accessible television interior. Weather can change the character of nearby moorland paths quickly. A village stroll and meal is a different outing from a longer countryside walk, so decide which you intend before leaving your base.

Give Blanchland its own unhurried stop with a meal or village walk. Avoid adding it as a rushed detour between two distant coastal locations.

Getting there.

Hexham is a useful railway base for Blanchland, followed by a planned road transfer. The village is not on the Tyne Valley rail line. Use lawful public parking and keep residential access clear; a hotel’s guest parking is not general visitor parking. If walking beyond the village, carry suitable footwear and a route for the countryside rather than relying on a short town-street circuit.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Which building was used in Vera?

The official source confirms Blanchland as a village location. This page does not assign an unsupported filming role to a particular interior.

Can I get there on the Hexham train?

The railway reaches Hexham, not Blanchland. Arrange the onward road journey and the return before travelling.

Can I use the hotel car park for sightseeing?

Follow the venue’s arrangements. Guest or customer parking should not be treated as an unrestricted public village car park.

Build it into the day.

Hexham offers the larger market-town setting and railway access. Wylam provides a public riverside walk for a separate valley day.
