How Burghley House appears
Burghley House becomes Rosings Park in the 2005 film, the home of Judi Dench's Lady Catherine de Bourgh. VisitBritain explicitly distinguishes it from Belton House, which supplies Rosings in the 1995 series. Burghley's own account confirms the 2005 production and its cast filming at the estate. The screen house represents wealth and authority within Elizabeth's story, but it is only one component of the fictional setting: Stourhead provides the garden sequence surrounding Darcy's first proposal.
The real place
What you can visit
The real house stands beside Stamford, with substantial historic interiors and Capability Brown parkland. That combination gives a visitor choices about how much of the estate to explore, but access to the park should not be confused with admission to the house. Plan around the current house route if interior recognition is the main reason for going. The estate's other film credits can add interest, yet the Pride and Prejudice identity is specific: this is the 2005 Rosings, not Pemberley or the Bennet family home.
Treat the house and the park as different parts of the plan. A pleasant walk from Stamford is worthwhile, but it does not replace checking whether the State Rooms are open on your date.
VisitBritain: Pride and Prejudice filming places ↗The nearest rail station is Stamford. Burghley's official directions put the park entrance around half a mile from the station and the house around one and a half miles away. Allow time for that approach and for a return train. Drivers should follow the estate's visitor directions and check whether a special event changes the normal arrival arrangements.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Which Lady Catherine lived here on screen?
Judi Dench's character in the 2005 film. The 1995 BBC adaptation used Belton as Rosings.
Is the proposal temple here too?
No. The film's Temple of Apollo sequence was filmed at Stourhead, in Wiltshire.
Can I walk from the train?
Yes, using the official visitor approach from Stamford. Remember that the house is farther from the station than the park entrance.
Plan your visit
Build it into the day.
Pair Burghley with Stamford's Meryton streets for a coherent 2005 film day. Belton can form a second Lincolnshire visit if you want to compare the two screen versions of Rosings.
