How Basildon Park appears

Basildon Park plays Netherfield in the 2005 film, Mr Bingley's grand rented house. The National Trust confirms the connection and identifies the Palladian mansion as the setting chosen for his household. Although Netherfield belongs to the story's Hertfordshire social world, the real property is in Berkshire. It is not the same house used for the 1995 television version. Remembering which Bingley and which adaptation you are following helps keep a screen itinerary accurate when several real estates share the fictional name.

The real place

What you can visit

The eighteenth-century mansion sits within parkland and restored gardens. That makes it possible to plan a visit around the real property as well as the recognisable film setting. Check the available house route and leave time for the surrounding grounds instead of expecting a separate themed attraction devoted entirely to the film. Basildon's other screen credits, including Downton Abbey and Bridgerton, do not mean that every room belongs to every production. The specific Pride and Prejudice connection here is the 2005 Netherfield.

Arrange both outward and return station transfers before setting off. A nearby station on a map is not evidence of a comfortable or suitable walking route to the house.

Getting there.

Pangbourne and Goring and Streatley are the rail options named by the National Trust. It advises booking a taxi because neither station has a taxi rank, and advises against walking along the busy road to the estate. Drivers use the main A329 entrance and follow the route to the visitor car park. Check any limited bus service directly before depending on it.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Whose house is Basildon on screen?

It is Mr Bingley's Netherfield in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, rather than Darcy's Pemberley.

Can I walk from Pangbourne?

The National Trust advises against the busy-road walk and recommends a pre-booked taxi from the station.

Is the fictional location also Berkshire?

No. The real filming property is Berkshire, while Netherfield belongs to the novel's Hertfordshire setting.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Use Basildon as a Berkshire house visit rather than forcing it into a Peak District day. Its Downton Abbey connection offers a useful second screen interest without adding another long journey. Also filmed here: see Basildon’s Downton Abbey role and its Bridgerton connection.
