How Ashton Court Estate appears

Ashton Court supplied country estate landscape in series 5, with its rolling parkland, old oaks and deer park standing in for the grounds of a grand house. The tourism sources do not tie it to a specific named estate in the story, so treat it as general scenery from the final series rather than a particular fictional place. In the story such scenes belong to Cornwall or the country around London; the real estate is on Bristol's western edge, just over the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The real place

What you can visit

Ashton Court is an 850-acre estate owned by Bristol City Council, with woodland, grassland, two deer parks, golf courses and mountain-bike trails, all free to enter. The mansion house is used for weddings and events, so access inside is limited. The estate is popular with walkers and families and hosts large events such as the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August. Check the council's pages for event closures.

Keep dogs on leads near the deer parks and give the deer plenty of space, especially in the autumn rut.

Getting there.

There are several car parks around the estate, some pay and display, reached from the A369 and Kennel Lodge Road. From Clifton you can walk across the Suspension Bridge and in through Clifton Lodge in about 20 minutes. Main paths around the mansion are firm; elsewhere they are grass and woodland tracks.
