How Christ Church appears

Christ Church’s stone Hall Staircase appears as the entry staircase to Hogwarts in Philosopher’s Stone. Its high windows, vaulted space and broad steps give the new pupils’ arrival an imposing architectural setting. The real Great Hall also influenced Hogwarts production design, but the familiar film dining-hall scenes were made on a studio set. Those are two different kinds of connection: an actual filmed staircase and an inspirational room. Appreciating that difference avoids turning the entire working college into an imagined school set or claiming every space has an on-screen role.

The real place

What you can visit

Christ Church is both an Oxford college and the city's cathedral, and it runs a ticketed visitor route that takes in the Hall Staircase, the Great Hall when it is not in use, the cathedral and Tom Quad. The staircase is the part fans recognise from the first two films; the Great Hall inspired the Hogwarts dining hall, which was built as a studio set. Because students eat and study here, the hall and other spaces close at short notice for college events, so the route can change on the day.

Book an early timed slot: the Hall Staircase is busiest from late morning, and the hall closes while students are dining.

Getting there.

Book a timed ticket on the college's official website before travelling, especially in summer and at weekends, and check the day's closures. The entrance is on St Aldate's, a ten-minute walk from Carfax and about twenty minutes from Oxford station. Park and Ride buses are the easiest way in by car. The Hall Staircase has steps; ask the college about step-free options when booking.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Was the Great Hall in the films shot here?

No. The Hogwarts dining hall was a studio set modelled on Christ Church's Great Hall. The real filmed element is the stone Hall Staircase, used for arrival scenes in Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets.

Do I need to book?

Yes, it is best to. Christ Church sells timed visitor tickets on its official website, and the hall can close for college use, so check opening on the day you plan to go.

How long should I allow?

Allow one to two hours for the staircase, the hall when open, the cathedral and the quads. Combine it with the Bodleian and New College for a full Harry Potter day in Oxford.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Walk ten minutes north to the Bodleian's Divinity School, then on to New College's cloisters for a complete Oxford Harry Potter route.
