How Sallagh Braes appears

In The Broken Man, season six's seventh episode, Sandor Clegane reappears alive among a community of villagers building a sept on a green hillside in the Riverlands, led by a former soldier turned septon. The wide grassy bowl below the cliffs of Sallagh Braes provided their settlement, with the half-built wooden sept and huts added for filming. The story places the village in the Riverlands, the war-torn heart of Westeros; the real landscape is the edge of the Antrim plateau, looking out to sea towards Scotland. The structures were temporary, and the exact field used is on farmland, so enjoy the escarpment from the public walking route.

The real place

What you can visit

Sallagh Braes is a dramatic semicircle of basalt cliffs, formed by an ancient landslip, on the edge of the Antrim Hills between Larne and Glenarm. The long-distance Antrim Hills Way follows the top of the escarpment, giving views over the bowl and along the coast to Scotland on clear days. It is open hill country with grazing animals and no facilities. The fields in the bowl below are private farmland, so stay on the waymarked route and do not cross fences.

Mountain weather changes fast. Take a map, waterproofs and warm layers, tell someone your route, and turn back in low cloud or high wind.

Getting there.

The walk is reached from minor roads inland from Ballygally on the A2 coast road, about 40 minutes from Belfast. Mid and East Antrim Borough Council's Sallagh Braes walk information gives the start point and route. The ground is rough, boggy in places and exposed on top; this is a hill walk for people with boots and some experience.
