How Fern Cottage appears
The white cottage on Roscarrock Hill, looking down over the harbour, is the outside of Martin's house and surgery in every series. Patients climb the hill to its door, Louisa walks up from the village and the view from its windows takes in the whole of Portwenn. Only the exterior belongs to this house. The surgery, consulting room and kitchen were built as sets in a barn at Roscarrock Manor Farm outside the village, so the inside of the real cottage looks nothing like the programme.
The real place
What you can see
Fern Cottage is a privately owned holiday let, not a museum. Guests who book a stay have the use of it; everyone else should see it from the public road on Roscarrock Hill or from across the harbour on the Platt, which gives the best overall view. Do not go up to the door, into the garden or onto the steps, and do not photograph through the windows. If you would like to stay in the house, book through the owner's website.
This is someone's home or a guest's holiday. Keep to the road, keep your voice down and do not knock or pose on the doorstep.
Visit Cornwall: Doc Martin locations ↗Park in Cornwall Council's New Road car park (PL29 3SB) at the top of the village and walk down; the lower streets are steep, narrow and not suitable for visitors' cars. The walk to the harbour takes about ten minutes downhill and longer on the way back up. There are steps and steep gradients throughout, so a step-free route to every frontage cannot be promised. Bodmin Parkway is the nearest main-line station, with an onward bus or taxi. Roscarrock Hill climbs steeply from the harbour on the western side of the village.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Can you go inside the Doc Martin house?
Only as a paying guest. Fern Cottage is a holiday let, and its interior is not the TV surgery: those rooms were sets in a barn on a private farm.
Where is the best view of it?
From the Platt and harbour front, looking across the water to Roscarrock Hill. You can also see it from the public road as you walk up the hill.
Where were the surgery interiors filmed?
In a converted barn at Roscarrock Manor Farm near Port Isaac. It is a private working farm with no public tour, so please do not try to visit.
Is there a map pin for it?
No. This guide does not pin private homes or holiday lets. It is on Roscarrock Hill, clearly visible from the harbour.
Private means private
See it only from public space.
See it from across the water on the Platt, then continue along the harbour front to the Golden Lion.
