How Lyme Park appears
Lyme supplies the exterior and grounds of Pemberley in the BBC's 1995 Pride and Prejudice. It is the place to recognise Colin Firth's Darcy returning across the estate after his swim, rather than the interior rooms Elizabeth tours with the housekeeper. The BBC's retrospective identifies that celebrated encounter as part of episode four, first broadcast on 15 October 1995. Keep that distinction in mind when planning a visit: the outside of this Pemberley and its screen interiors belong to different properties.
The real place
What you can visit
The National Trust estate at Disley includes the house, formal garden and extensive parkland. Their different characters make this more than a stop beside a famous pond. Begin outside the south front, where the water and formal garden make the Pemberley exterior recognisable, before choosing a longer park walk. The visitor route through the actual house is interesting in its own right, but it should not be presented as the rooms used for Elizabeth's Pemberley tour. Those scenes were filmed at Sudbury Hall.
Bring the 1995 exterior scene to mind before entering the house. The strongest screen comparison is outside, and the lake is for viewing rather than recreating Darcy's swim.
National Trust: Jane Austen filming locations ↗Disley station has a National Trust walking route to Lyme. Read the full route before setting off, because reaching the park entrance is only part of the approach to the house and garden. Drivers should follow the property's visitor entrance signs and parking instructions. Check the separate house, garden and park opening arrangements when choosing a date.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Which adaptation used Lyme?
The 1995 BBC series used the exterior and grounds as Pemberley. The 2005 film uses a different collection of houses.
Are the Pemberley interiors here?
The screen interiors were filmed at Sudbury Hall. A visit inside Lyme shows the real house rather than those particular rooms.
Can I arrive by train?
Yes. The National Trust publishes a walking route from Disley station; allow for the estate approach beyond the entrance.
Plan your visit
Build it into the day.
Pair Lyme with Sudbury Hall across a longer itinerary to compare the two halves of the BBC's Pemberley. They are separate journeys, so give each estate its own visiting time.
