How Levant Mine and Beam Engine appears

Levant appears as part of the series' wider mining country and as Tressiders Rolling Mill, a business that features in Ross's dealings. The story sets these works in the mining district of fictional Cornwall rather than at Pendeen itself. Some engine-room action early in series 2 was shot against a green screen and composited, so not every machinery close-up was filmed inside the real engine house. What you can match on the ground are the clifftop buildings, chimneys and spoil running down to the sea, which the camera uses as a backdrop for Ross's working world.

The real place

What you can visit

Levant is a National Trust site on the cliffs near Pendeen, a mile or so north of Botallack. Its 1840s beam engine has been restored to steam and is shown on guided tours, which must be booked in advance; check the National Trust page for tour dates and current prices. The coast path runs past the site, so you can see the buildings and cliffs at any time without a ticket. Levant was the scene of a mining disaster in 1919, and the site tells that story with care.

Stay on the marked paths: old mine shafts, open adits and crumbling walls are scattered across this coast, cliff edges are unfenced and can be undercut, and dogs and children need keeping close.

Getting there.

Parking is at Geevor Tin Mine, then a walk of about 15 to 20 minutes on uneven ground to Levant. If you need accessible parking, contact the National Trust in advance. Book the beam engine tour before travelling, especially in school holidays. Geevor next door is a separate, independently run mine museum with its own tickets.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Do you need to book Levant Mine?

Yes, for the beam engine. The National Trust runs tours that need booking in advance. The coast path past the buildings is open at any time.

Where do you park for Levant?

At Geevor Tin Mine, then walk 15 to 20 minutes on rough ground. Ask the National Trust in advance about accessible parking.

Was the engine room in Poldark filmed at Levant?

Partly. Levant's buildings and setting are real, but some early series 2 engine-room action used a green screen, so not every interior shot was filmed in the engine house.
