How Bodmin Moor near Minions appears
The moorland north-west of Minions supplies the wide, rough country around Nampara. In the first episode, the scene where Ross and Demelza first meet was filmed in this area. The production also used miners' cottages on the moor, but those are private homes and the farmhouse that played Nampara is a private property, so this guide gives no directions to either. The story places Nampara near the north coast; the real moor is inland, on the south-eastern edge of Bodmin Moor.
The real place
What you can visit
Minions is a small moorland village, among the highest in Cornwall, surrounded by mining remains and Bronze Age monuments. From the village car park you can walk to the Hurlers, three Bronze Age stone circles, to the restored engine house at Houseman's Shaft, and up to the Cheesewring, a stack of granite slabs on Stowe's Hill. The ground is open access moorland in many areas, with grazing ponies, cattle and sheep. The village has a tea room and a pub.
Stick to tracks and open-access land, leave gates as you find them, keep dogs under control near livestock, and do not approach private cottages or farmhouses.

Paths across the moor are rough, boggy in places and exposed. Weather changes quickly up here, so carry a waterproof and a map. Charlestown is about 40 minutes' drive away.
